Agentic AI: From Assistants to Autonomous Decision Makers

You’ve probably used AI to summarise an email, draft a brief, or troubleshoot a chunk of code. It’s helpful - but still reactive.
You prompt, it responds. That’s assistant level.
But the next wave of AI is something different. It’s agentic. These systems don’t just generate; they act. They don’t wait for instructions - they interpret intent, take initiative, and complete multi-step tasks autonomously. We’re already seeing the shift.
Venture capital is pouring into agentic start-ups like Adopt AI, and the research community is moving quickly from proof-of-concept to application.
After finding resources and options to expand, Matthew found that “AI is beginning to close the loop between us knowing what needs to happen, and actually being able to make it happen.” That’s a fundamental change - and it’s one most organisations haven’t prepared themselves - or their people - for.
This evolution matters because it transforms how businesses scale knowledge and execution. Instead of relying on humans to move work from idea to action, agentic systems collapse the gap. Imagine a system that reads a backlog, plans a campaign, sends comms, and flags blockers - all without waiting for a prompt.
That’s not a future vision; that’s what’s being quietly tested today. For knowledge workers paying attention: now is the time to act.
First, audit your workflows. Look for the tasks that are structured, repetitive, and rules-based - those are ripe for autonomy. Second, don’t wait to think about governance. It’s much easier to design ethical boundaries before the tech is embedded. Finally, experiment where the stakes are low but the feedback loops are fast — onboarding processes, internal reporting, research prep.
Agentic AI isn’t about smarter tools. It’s about removing the need for constant supervision. And those who learn to trust the right systems, in the right ways, will move faster than the rest.
Upgrading knowledge production processes is one of the core tenets at MadeWithData. Read more about how we can help - including designing your own project.

Helpful blog on AI! I saw another related post recently that might be a good addition to this conversation.
